Key Responsibilities
Senior Backend developer is a role that:
• Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java 17+ and Spring Boot.
• Implement microservices architecture to ensure scalability and maintainability.
• Develop REST and SOAP APIs.
• Integrate with databases using ORM frameworks and ensure efficient DB connectivity.
• Develop and maintain messaging services using JMS and Solace.
• Ensure seamless API connectivity using platforms such as Kong or Axway.
• Manage project dependencies and build processes using Maven.
• Collaborate with the team using Git for version control.
• Containerize applications using Docker for consistent deployment.
• Utilize Azure DevOps (ADO) for CI/CD pipelines and project management.
• Deploy and manage applications on Kubernetes and AWS.
• Implement service virtualization for testing and development.
• Write and maintain unit tests using JUnit.
• Conduct integration testing to ensure seamless interaction between components.
• Document APIs using Swagger.
• Perform performance testing and scripting to ensure application efficiency using tools like JMeter.
• Ensure adherence and continuous improvement of Agile practices, coaching and teaching new techniques to the teams needed to achieve optimum productivity.
• Engage and collaborate with a wide group of technology teams from upstream TP systems, integration, modelling team, database administrators, messaging teams, and architecture.
Strategy
• Oversees the execution of functional standards and best practices and provide technical assistance to the team members of their Chapter.
• Responsible for the quality of the code repository where applicable.
• Acts as a conduit for the wider domain strategy, for example technical standards.
• Prioritises and makes available capacity for technical debt.
• This role is around capability building, it is not to own applications or delivery.
Business
• Experienced practitioner and hands on contribution to the squad delivery for their craft (Eg. Engineering).
• Responsible for balancing skills and capabilities across teams (squads) and hives in partnership with the Chief Product Owner, Hive Tech Lead & Hive Leadership, and in alignment with the fixed capacity model.
• Responsible to evolve the craft towards improving automation, simplification and innovative use of latest market trends.
Processes
• Adopt and embed the Change Delivery Standards throughout the lifecycle of the product / service.
• Ensure role, job descriptions and expectations are clearly set and periodic feedback provided to the entire team.
• Follows the chapter operating model to ensure a system exists to continue to build capability and performance of the chapter.
People & Talent
• 5+ years of experience in microservice API development using Java frameworks.
• Experience in developing and deploying cloud-native applications, with a focus on Function as a Service (FaaS) and Dev-in-a-box solutions.
• Strong skills in API integration with in-house and third-party vendor applications, including Trading Networks.
• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes container platforms.
• Preferred experience in the banking domain.
• Knowledge of Postgres or Oracle relational databases.
• Proficient in Spring Boot and API development
• Strong knowledge of Agile Development (CI/CD, TDD/BDD, SCRUM, KanBan).
• Minimum 10 years of software development experience.
• Passion for technology and a collaborative, consultative work environment.
• Proven skills in coordination, staff management, and leadership with vendors and internal teams.
Risk Management
• Strong knowledge of risk and regulatory delivery.
• Comprehensive understanding of software design and development.
• Adheres to common practices to mitigate risk in their respective domain.
Governance
• Ensure all artefacts and assurance deliverables are as per the required standards and policies (e.g., SCB Governance Standards, ESDLC etc.).
Regulatory & Business Conduct
• Display exemplary conduct and live by the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct.
• Take personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across Standard Chartered Bank. This includes understanding and ensuring compliance with, in letter and spirit, all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and the Group Code of Conduct.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related field.
• Overall experience of 10+ years
• Experience in global diverse organization in building overall capability and technical expertise
