• Standard Chartered is seeking a technically strong and solutions-oriented Backend engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of scalable, high-performance Java/Spring boot micro service applications. You will play a key role in establishing Backend design principles, coding standards, and architectural patterns aligned with the company’s long-term vision.
• In this role, you’ll architect resilient, API-first backend platforms using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, RESTful services, messaging, caching, and cloud-ready engineering patterns. You will drive technical decisions, troubleshoot complex production issues across application, integration, database, and infrastructure layers, and mentor teams on Agile delivery, secure coding, observability, and engineering excellence.
• This is a hands-on, cross-functional role where you will collaborate with engineering, product, and architecture teams to deliver forward-looking solutions that are modular, extensible, and aligned with evolving technology standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Establish and enforce backend design principles, coding standards, API standards, and architectural patterns in line with the company's long-term technology vision. Mentor teams to ensure consistent adoption, maintainability, resilience, and alignment with business objectives.
• Architect scalable, secure, and performance-first backend services from inception. Lead adoption of modern backend engineering practices including Java, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, event-driven integration, caching, database optimisation, and cloud-ready deployment patterns.
• Having strong analytical skill & able to look at the problem from many angles. Able to narrow down the problem and resolving the issue in a short time.
• Having a broad level view / expertise that can troubleshoot a problem from different infra layer in eco system. Having what it takes to advise other team as well as internal team in resolving the issue from end to end.
• Lead a team, and able to groom the team on the technical/domain expertise.
• Design and enforce robust backend architectural frameworks for microservices and distributed systems. Define a forward-looking architectural vision prioritising modularity, scalability, resilience, observability, performance, and extensibility to future-proof applications.
• Capable of doing requirement analysis for complex requirement. Convert them into smaller user stories. Support the team for the whole application development & deployment & support.
• Champion on the SDLC processes & Agile. Driving the adoption & promote the processes in the team Owning the project releases.
• Drive cross-team architecture decisions across backend, frontend, data, integration, and infrastructure layers. Resolve cross-squad dependencies involving APIs, shared services, batch processes, messaging, and platform components, while ensuring technical feasibility with product owners.
• Overseeing requirement for the application level. Provide consultancy & mentoring & guidance to the team during the requirement understanding & agile processes.
• Strong understanding on the security domain, can be a gatekeeper, Install the security checklist & promoting good security habit in programming.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related discipline; equivalent practical experience also accepted.
• Minimum 8 years of hands-on backend engineering experience.
• Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, SQL, relational databases, messaging, caching, and backend integration patterns.
• Proven track record in building scalable, secure, resilient, and high-performance backend services and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with API design, service-to-service integration, event-driven architecture, batch processing, database optimisation, and observability practices.
• Good understanding of SDLC, Agile delivery, CI/CD, testing strategy, unit testing, end-to-end testing, and release support.
• Strong capability in performance optimisation, troubleshooting, secure coding, and engineering best practices.
• Experience in requirement analysis, user story breakdown, and collaboration with product, engineering, and architecture teams.
• Ability to mentor peers and promote quality, security, performance, resilience, and backend engineering standards.
