Job Summary

The Technology Support Database team is organized across technologies and is tiered to provide the full range of support services for Oracle, Sybase, DB/2, MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL and other database technologies running on multiple types of platforms and architectures across the bank’s global estate.

The Oracle Level 3 DBA team is responsible for providing Database Engineering, Advanced Technical Support, Problem diagnosis/resolution and proactive database services. The L3 DBA team work closely with the L2 Oracle support team as well as project teams and other vendors to help deliver 24x7 support for the wider Oracle estate and support assistance on complex activities

Accountable:

As an L3 Oracle DBA, the resource should be able to resolve the most complex technical issues professionally, rapidly and consistently.  This means working alongside colleagues and other teams to identify any root causes issues.  For implementing features and initiatives an expert base technology understanding is required as well as ability to raise and follow current change management guidelines and processes defined in the team and bank. As a leader the staff member is senior enough to not only focus on the technical but also have developed soft skills such as written, verbal and presenting as needed.  Documentation of technical issues and solutions as well as creating or updating is as critical as technical experience

Consulted:

As an L3 DBA the resource must also be able to work with colleagues both internal to the team and external.  This to ensure efficient solution design and implementation plans for various challenges in the database estate and working towards increasingly automated monitoring and support solutions available.

Key Responsibilities

Informed:

The L3 DBA is required to provide database support of deep technical expertise to all the stakeholders in a stable, productive, and cost-effective manner. They should be highly self-motivated, task oriented and capable of working independently in carrying out tasks and trouble shooting.

•    They must proactively monitor and make strategic plans to address issues to improve service stability.
•    They are responsible for improvement and maintenance of the databases to include rollout and upgrades.
•    They provide technical support and resolution on outage in a short turnaround time including full RCA.
•    They must actively engage with key stakeholders to ensure different objectives are aligned and assist
stakeholders by providing specialist skills and knowledge as required.
•    They will participate in out-of-hours support and delivery as required for implementation in projects and change.
•    They must be able to document technical matters to create process where non existing, update where uplift is identified and proactively improve the environment they work in on a daily basis.
•    Risk management understanding is crucial and able to follow life cycle of change and controls / procedures and practices.

•    Awareness and understanding of the application database environments for different business groups

Processes

•    Responsible for smooth operations of database and monitoring the database. Also responsible for planning and implementing database changes.  To define process where none exists or to update process where uplift is identified such that others can follow.

•    Personal soft skills are crucial.  As a graduate the resource should be able to compile and present ideas using presentations and documents as well as work on operational improvements.

•    Able to identify and document or present risks to the correct management and other technical staff to ensure risk is minimise

Governance 

•    Ensure in all work items that correct documentation is produced.  Able to identify missing components and to create those for general uplift.

Other Responsibilities

•    As an L3 DBA, the resource should be able to resolve the most complex technical issues professionally, rapidly, and consistently and work alongside both colleagues and other teams to identify any root cause or required implementation plan.

•    The L3 DBA is responsible for ensuring availability and performance of the databases that support the system.

•    The L3 DBA is responsible for improvement and maintenance of the databases to include rollout and upgrades.  Provide technical support and resolve outage in a short turnaround time.  

•    The L3 DBA will actively engage with key stakeholders to ensure different objectives are aligned and assist stakeholders by providing specialist skills and knowledge as required.

•    The L3 DBA will participate in out-of-hours support and delivery as required as well as change implementation.

Qualifications

•    Bachelors or master’s degree preferred
•    Formal Database Certifications preferred

Skills and Experience

•    Oracle 11G/12c/19c RAC ASM Clusterware
•    Performance / resource management, Data guard, pl/sql, SQL, Clusterware/ASM and OEM
•    Database Security Product Implementation and Migration (Oracle TDE, Network SSL/NDE)
•    Oracle Golden Gate replication 
•    Oracle RMAN Backup restore and Performance Tuning
•    Backup and Recovery techniques
•    Knowledge on Linux, Networking, Storage
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills with excellent attention to customer service
•    Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language – Python, Shell, Ansible, GO, C
