Job Summary
- We’re seeking a highly skilled and experienced Java Backend Engineer Development Specialist to join our dynamic team. You’ll be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust, secure and efficient financial systems.
- You’ll be part of our global Application Development, Support and Engineering Team, which is the technical backbone of our digital strategy, combining innovative software development with rigorous financial security protocols to deliver seamless experiences that empower our customers. App Development, Support and Engineering sits within our global Technology and Operations team.

Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java 17 and Spring Boot or Quarkus.
• Implement microservices architecture to ensure scalability and maintainability.
• Develop REST (Representational State Transfer) and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) APIs.
• Integrate with databases using Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) frameworks and ensure efficient database connectivity.
• Develop and maintain messaging services using Java Message Service (JMS) and Solace.
• Ensure seamless API connectivity using platforms such as Kong or Axway.
• Manage project dependencies and build processes using Apache Maven.
• Collaborate with the team using Git for version control.
• Containerise applications using Docker for consistent deployment.
• Utilise Azure DevOps (ADO) for Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) pipelines and project management.
• Deploy and manage applications on Red Hat OpenShift and Amazon Web Services (AWS)
• Implement service virtualisation for testing and development.
• Write and maintain unit tests using JUnit.
• Conduct integration testing to ensure seamless interaction between components.
• Document APIs using Swagger
- Perform performance testing and scripting to ensure application efficiency using tools like Apache JMeter.
• Ensure adherence and continuous improvement of Agile practices, coaching and teaching new techniques to the team as needed to achieve optimum productivity.
• Engage and collaborate with a wide group of technology teams from upstream systems, integration, modelling, database administrators, messaging teams, and architecture.
Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Java 17, frameworks like Spring Boot or Quarkus, and microservices architecture. In addition, they will have:
• Extensive experience in microservice API development using Java frameworks.
• Experience in developing and deploying cloud-native applications, with a focus on Function as a Service (FaaS) and dev-in-a-box solutions.
• Strong skills in API integration with in-house and third-party vendor applications, including Trading Networks.
• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes (K8s), or Red Hat OpenShift application platforms.
• Preferred experience in the banking domain.
• Knowledge of PostgreSQL (Postgres) or Oracle relational databases.
• Strong knowledge of Agile Development.
• Experience with advanced features and tools in the Atlassian software suite.
• Proven skills in coordination, staff management, and leadership with vendors and internal teams.
• Strong knowledge of risk and regulatory delivery.
• Excellent English oral and written communication skills.
