Job Summary

The Financial Controller is a pivotal senior leadership role within Standard Chartered Bank's Finance team . The role offers a unique opportunity to shape and enhance financial governance within a respected global bank, supporting sustainable business growth and promoting excellence in all finance-related activities. The Financial Controller will play a critical part in driving integrity, transparency, and professionalism, partnering with various internal and external stakeholders to deliver insights that enable effective decision-making.  This role demands a combination of expert technical knowledge, strong leadership capabilities, and an ability to navigate complex regulatory and business landscapes while supporting the Bank’s broader strategic ambitions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage end-to-end financial accounting processes to deliver statutory, regulatory, and internal management reports with strict adherence to IFRS, local regulations, and Group policies, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously enhance a comprehensive financial control framework to safeguard the quality and transparency of all financial reporting activities, identifying potential risks and proactively instituting mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with Group Tax and other internal stakeholders to devise and execute effective tax strategies, optimising the Bank's tax position while ensuring compliance with all statutory obligations and regulatory frameworks.
  • Oversee comprehensive control over capital adequacy, liquidity management, funding, balance sheet, and market risk parameters, balancing regulatory requirements against ongoing business priorities and objectives.
  • Partner with the Country Treasurer in the preparation, presentation, and securing of Board and regulatory approvals for the Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP), ensuring robust documentation and rationale.
  • Direct the external audit relationship, including defining audit scope and terms of engagement, coordinating deliverables, managing audit queries, and driving continuous enhancement of financial control processes and governance standards.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and long-term financial planning cycles, providing detailed financial analysis, forecasting insights, and strategic recommendations that support the Bank’s business direction and operational needs.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of developments in accounting standards, banking regulations, and industry best practices, ensuring the finance function remains compliant, innovative, and responsive to changing environments.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive financial performance reports, internal controls updates, and regulatory compliance summaries to senior leadership teams and Board committees, facilitating informed decision-making at the highest level.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement within the finance team, setting clear objectives, fostering accountability, and inspiring high performance across all financial activities.

Skills and Experience

  • Extensive proven experience in managing complex regulatory financial reporting frameworks, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail and unwavering compliance with international and local standards.
  • Expertise in preparing financial statements in full compliance with IFRS and Group policies, coupled with the ability to perform sophisticated financial analyses that inform strategic business decisions.
  • Strong background in managing banking capital structures, liquidity strategies, funding operations, and market risk within a highly regulated financial services environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in guiding multifunctional finance teams, promoting collaboration and effective communication across internal departments, regulators, and external auditors.
  • Well-versed in developing and implementing tax strategies aligned with regulatory requirements and business operational goals, improving overall financial efficiency.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of accounting standard evolutions, regulatory shifts, and technological advancements impacting finance.
  • Possesses a balanced blend of technical financial acumen, ethical integrity, and leadership prowess necessary to navigate the complexities of a global financial institution with agility and foresight.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and strong analytical mindset, enabling the anticipation of challenges and proactive management of risks within financial operations.
  • Effective interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with an ability to build trust and influence at all organisational levels.

Qualifications

•    Applicants must possess a professional accounting qualification such as CA, CPA, ACCA, or CIMA complemented by a relevant degree in Business, Accountancy, Finance, or an MBA.
•    Familiarity with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), local regulatory frameworks applicable to banking, and practical experience with financial systems and controls is essential. 
•    Continuous professional development and active membership in respected accounting or finance professional bodies are highly desirable.
