Job Summary
The role sits in the Standard Charted Financial Markets Technology team focusing on the build out of the in-house strategic cross asset risk platform: SABRE, and the strategic market and reference data system: FALCON. The primary responsibility is to design, build, and operate scalable software services for market, static, and reference data, with strong emphasis on reliability, performance, and developer-friendly interfaces.
Whilst the SABRE platform has continuously been improved over the years to scale to an ever-increasing user base and a growing number of capabilities, amount of data and computation, its static and market data components have grown organically without going through any drastic transformation. The refreshed FM static and market strategy also provides a unique opportunity to realign the SABRE Static and Market Data Service (MDS) software architecture, interfaces and operational processes to that strategy.
As a Software Engineer, this role will help build a strategic platform that provides a unified data API and a centralized data store for intraday and EOD pricing and risk workflows. You will contribute across the full engineering lifecycle: architecture design, data model implementation, service development, integration, testing, production rollout, and continuous improvement.
FALCON is Financial Markets’ strategic market and reference data platform, built to unify how the bank sources, stores, manages, and distributes market data across all asset classes. Instead of today’s fragmented landscape — multiple systems, duplicate data flows, inconsistent repositories, and manual curve setups — FALCON provides a single, end to end data foundation for real time intraday prices, historical time series, official EOD snaps, and reference data. From an engineering standpoint, the platform focuses on:
• Building high-throughput, low-latency data ingestion and distribution services.
• Implementing robust data quality controls, lineage, and restatement capabilities.
• Designing resilient APIs and event-driven workflows for downstream consumers.
• Reducing operational risk through automation, observability, and controlled release processes.
• Enabling rapid onboarding of new market observables through reusable platform components.
• By consolidating market and reference data into one cohesive platform, this role directly improves the consistency and timeliness of data used by Front Office, Risk, Finance, and Operations, while creating a scalable technical foundation for future automation and growth.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop, and maintain business features in the FALCON platform using Java and related libraries.
• Translate functional and data requirements into clean, scalable, and maintainable service implementations aligned with FALCON architecture standards.
• Build and enhance core components for market and reference data workflows, including ingestion, validation, transformation, and distribution.
• Implement and optimize REST/API integrations, messaging/event flows, and database access layers to support intraday and EOD use cases.
• Write high-quality code with strong unit/integration test coverage, and ensure solutions meet performance, reliability, and security expectations.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Business Analysts, QA, and peer engineers to clarify requirements, refine technical solutions, and deliver sprint commitments.
• Participate in code reviews, troubleshooting, and defect resolution; perform root-cause analysis and implement sustainable fixes.
• Support production releases and post-release stability by improving observability, logging, monitoring, and operational runbooks.
• Proactively identify technical risks, dependencies, and bottlenecks, and communicate mitigation plans to the team in a timely manner.
• Continuously improve engineering practices through refactoring, automation, and contribution to shared platform components.
Regulatory & Business Conduct
• Display exemplary conduct and live by the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct.
• Take personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across Standard Chartered Bank. This includes understanding and ensuring compliance with, in letter and spirit, all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and the Group Code of Conduct.
• Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate, and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters
Key Stakeholders
• Traders, quantitative analysts, middle office, operations, market risk, finance, business analysts, testers, project managers, support groups
Skills and Experience
• Java Development and Backend Engineering
• Backend Service Design and API HTTP/HTTPS and WebSocket Development
• Relational Databases and SQL Time Series Data and Data Modeling
• High Concurrency and Performance Optimization
• Financial Markets Domain Knowledge
• Communication and Stakeholder Collaboration
Qualifications
• 5-10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with strong focus on Java backend development in enterprise environments.
• Strong proficiency in core Java, including object-oriented design, collections, concurrency, multithreading, memory/performance considerations, and common design patterns.
• Solid experience with Maven, Git, and standard team-based development workflows including branching, code review, and version control best practices.
• Proven experience in backend service development, including service design, API implementation, integration patterns, and building reliable, maintainable, and scalable distributed systems.
• Good understanding of relational databases, including SQL design, query optimization, transactions, indexing, and data modeling.
• Familiarity with time-series data storage and query patterns, especially for large-volume historical and intraday financial data.
• Experience building systems for high-throughput and high-concurrency workloads, with strong understanding of performance tuning, asynchronous processing, caching, and resilience patterns.
• Strong foundation in data structures and algorithms, with the ability to apply them pragmatically in production systems.
• Hands-on experience with HTTP/HTTPS service development, RESTful APIs, and real-time communication technologies such as WebSocket.
• Experience with search and indexing technologies is a plus; knowledge of Lucene or Lucene-based search solutions is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with containerization and deployment practices, including Docker and Kubernetes-based environments.
• Basic to solid Linux command-line skills, including scripting with Shell for automation, troubleshooting, and operational support.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and standard software delivery processes, including build, test, packaging, deployment, and release controls.
• Good understanding of software quality practices, including unit testing, integration testing, debugging, observability, and production issue analysis.
• Experience with messaging, event-driven architecture, or batch/stream processing is a strong plus.
• Understanding of security and secure coding fundamentals for backend services, including authentication, authorization, encryption in transit, and secrets handling.
• Exposure to financial markets domain concepts is preferred, especially market data, reference data, pricing data, time series, or cross-asset workflows.
• Basic knowledge of financial instruments and trading-related data concepts is beneficial, even if not at quantitative or pricing-model level.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand business requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work closely with engineers, QA, product partners, and business stakeholders in an Agile delivery environment.
• Self-driven, delivery-focused, and able to manage priorities across multiple parallel workstreams.
• High level of ownership, attention to detail, integrity, and willingness to support production systems when needed.
• Languages: Chinese, English
