Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Credit Manager to lead and oversee credit risk management activities in our Kampala office. This role is critical in safeguarding asset quality, ensuring robust risk-return decisions, and supporting strategic business planning through insightful forecasting. The successful candidate will uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability while nurturing a culture of excellence and continuous risk management improvement across the bank's operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee comprehensive credit risk management activities, ensuring meticulous evaluation and management of customer creditworthiness and portfolio quality across corporate and commercial sectors.
- Design, implement, and continually refine credit risk policies and frameworks that align with the bank’s strategic objectives, risk appetite, and compliance requirements.
- Evaluate, endorse, or reject credit applications within delegated authority limits, ensuring adherence to Group Mandates and established credit standards.
- Continuously monitor credit portfolio performance, analyse impairment patterns, identify early risk indicators, undertake stress testing and scenario planning to pre-empt potential credit challenges.
- Prepare detailed and clear risk reports for senior management, risk committees, regulators, and other stakeholders that inform decision-making and strategic direction.
- Enhance internal controls and processes related to credit risk management to improve efficiency, accuracy, and timely escalation of material risks or breaches.
- Foster strong collaborative relationships with internal teams such as Sales, Compliance, and Risk, as well as external parties including clients, regulators, and credit rating agencies to facilitate transparent and informed credit decision-making.
- Champion a culture of risk awareness, continuous learning, and professional development within the team and wider bank community.
Skills and Experience
- Demonstrable experience managing credit risk across diverse corporate and commercial banking loan portfolios with strong results in risk mitigation and portfolio health management.
- Deep understanding of operational risk management principles, credit policies, and regulatory frameworks governing banking operations in Uganda and internationally.
- Advanced analytical skills including financial statement analysis, credit scoring methodologies, portfolio risk review, stress testing techniques, and comprehensive risk reporting.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to effectively engage stakeholders at all levels, from frontline teams to senior executives, regulators, and external partners.
- Proven leadership capabilities including mentoring, developing talent, and fostering high-performance teams aligned with organisational values and risk culture.
- Experience with credit risk analytics software and systems to support data-driven decision-making and reporting accuracy.
- Prior exposure to regulatory engagement processes and familiarity with credit risk assessment in the context of regulatory audits and external credit reviews add value.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, Risk Management, or a closely related discipline; postgraduate degrees or professional certifications such as CFA, FRM, or certifications in credit/risk management are highly desirable.
- Formal training and certification in credit risk management, compliance, and banking regulations.
- Continuous commitment to professional development through relevant courses, workshops, and seminars in credit risk, regulatory updates, and emerging industry practices.
