Job Description: 

Job Summary

•    Portfolio & Records Management – ensure completeness of IP team records on various internal platforms and repositories. Responsible for working with external counsel on IP matters globally. Responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Group’s intellectual property portfolios (registered trade marks, granted patents and copyrights).  
•    IP intelligence and trade mark search platforms - using various IP intelligence and search platforms for identifying prior IP rights, watch service, and horizon risk monitoring. Prepare preliminary findings and advice from data derived from such platforms.
•    IP filing, prosecution and registration - Prepare draft filing instructions and responses to Trade Mark Examination Reports
•    Partner and collaborate with stakeholders at both Group and Country in various Business Units and Functions (including Legal, Corporate Affairs Brand and Marketing, and SC Ventures) to ensure transactions and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Day to day administration of the Group’s global intellectual property portfolios including:
•    conducting preliminary inhouse trade mark and patent searches;
•    co-ordinating multi-country trade mark and patent searches;
•    working with IP & Brand lawyers on the filing of trade mark and patent applications,
•    docketing of official IP office action deadlines,
•    monitoring and ensuring the timely renewal of registered IP including collation of evidence of use and ensuring the execution of declaration where required,
•    maintenance of all requisite country IP office documentation including powers of attorney;
•    assist in supporting any IP dispute matters including oppositions, revocations and court related disputes, and complaints filed with regulators and social media organisations; and
•    working with external counsel in relation to the above where such matter has been briefed out.

Responsible for the internal maintenance of IP & Brand team records including:
•    Group’s internal policy in relation to trade marks;
•    collating evidence of use for all of the Group’s Masterbrands and other strategically important trade marks;
•    IP documents including settlement agreements and licences;
•    Leading on all financial administration matters related to global external counsel spend, tracking and reconciliation of external counsel fee quotes with invoices rendered for specific matters;

Skills and Experience

•    Knowledge and understanding of intellectual property specifically trade marks and copyright. This includes conducting and analysing registered trade mark searches, drafting trade mark specifications, protecting trade marks including filing and prosecuting trade mark applications. 
•    Knowledge of patents, design rights, contracts, disputes and litigation and advertising law.
•    Experience in the banking industry (whether through in-house or private practice) is preferred but not mandatory.
•    Experience in using IP intelligence and trade mark search platforms (e.g. CorSearch, TrademarkNow, PatSnap etc) to conduct clearance searches, risk assessments and ongoing brand monitoring.
•    Ability to collaborate with stakeholders and influence where necessary
•    Experience in data management specifically relating to data on IP registrations, internal team matters, external counsel budgets, conducing IP audits, and managing renewals.

Qualifications

•    Prefer a candidate with experience with intellectual property matters whether in private practice or within an inhouse IP team.
•    Any legal or IP qualifications – e.g. Registered Malaysian Trade Mark Agent (as recognised by MyIPO) or qualified to practise law in Malaysia with a recognised law degree (LL.B or equivalent).
