Job Summary
Standard Chartered UK is on the lookout for a talented Director of Indirect Tax! This role involves leading the indirect tax efforts for both the UK and Europe, where you'll manage the indirect taxes for Standard Chartered Bank and its group. Key Responsibilities
- Implement key UK indirect tax initiatives and reclaims.
- Assist the Global Tax team’s transition to the Tax Target Operating Model (TOM) for compliance, aiming for in-house management by our Centre of Excellence (CoE) and global advisors. This is vital for evolving into a best-in-class tax function.
- Identify and advise on indirect tax matters that benefit the Tax function or SCB’s business, aligned with risk management policies
- Advise on indirect tax implications of UK and European transactions and manage post-implementation issues, including projects, reorganisations, and new offerings.
- Provide timely indirect tax advice to SCB's business functions, ensuring appropriate risk management for all transactions, including new projects and products.
- Manage SCB’s relationship with HMRC and external advisors, reviewing positions to ensure optimal outcomes aligned with our policies.
- Collaborate with the Head of Tax and other managers to identify and execute tax initiatives.
- Represent SCB in local industry groups like UK Finance.
- Manage relationships with CoE, Finance, and external advisors to ensure timely indirect tax filings, payments, and refunds in the UK and Europe.
- Assist in developing systems and processes impacting indirect tax to manage and distribute up-to-date knowledge, working with advisors and tech teams to innovate and streamline the indirect tax function.
- Lead one direct report, guiding on indirect tax and management
- Enhance team’s indirect tax and soft skills
- Identify risks to SCB’s indirect tax position in the UK and Europe, and escalate key tax risks to Head of Tax
- Manage relationships with regulatory bodies like HMRC on indirect tax
- Develop indirect tax risk management controls per policies for the UK and Europe
- Implement changes from new laws and guidance in the UK and Europe
- Ensure timely, complete, and accurate filing of all indirect tax returns in the UK with the CoE team
- Oversee deliverables from the CoE team and external advisors for compliance with tax policies
- Exemplify the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct.
- Take responsibility for upholding high ethical standards and compliance with laws, regulations, and the Group Code.
- Collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate, and resolve risk and compliance issues.
- Join the UK Country Tax team to achieve the Bank’s Conduct Principles: Fair Outcomes for Clients; Effective Financial Markets; Financial Crime Compliance; The Right Environment.
- Support the Head of Tax, UK & Europe in maintaining a strong relationship with HMRC regarding UK indirect taxes.

Skills and Experience
- At least 7 years of experience in financial services with a focus on indirect tax.
- A preference for ATT, ACA, CTA, or equivalent credentials.
- Membership in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAA) or the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) is preferred.
- Proficient in English.
