The Senior Manager, Market Risk is responsible for safeguarding the integrity of the Group’s risk and return decision-making framework, with a primary focus on Equity Derivatives. This role ensures that market risks are accurately assessed, transparently communicated, and effectively controlled in line with the Group’s Risk Appetite and Risk Management Framework.
The role carries direct ownership of market risk control for the Equity Derivatives business and supports the Credit Trading function by ensuring robust governance, regulatory compliance, stress testing, scenario analysis, and risk oversight. The successful candidate will act as a strategic risk partner to front-office leadership while maintaining the independence and integrity of the Market Risk function.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Support the development and execution of market risk strategy for the Equity Derivatives business.
- Contribute to strategic planning initiatives aligned with the Group’s broader risk objectives.
- Promote a strong risk culture, discipline, and governance framework across the function.
Business Partnership & Advisory
- Partner with Trading, Product Heads, and senior business stakeholders to communicate strategic risk priorities.
- Provide independent challenge and oversight to ensure risk-taking activities remain aligned with approved risk appetite and business strategy.
- Maintain and enhance market risk infrastructure, analytical capabilities, and technical frameworks to support evolving business requirements.
- Ensure timely and accurate regulatory and internal risk reporting.
Risk Management & Control
- Own and oversee market risk management for the Equity Derivatives desk, ensuring risks are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
- Assess the Group’s market risk profile and recommend rebalancing actions, control enhancements, or mitigation strategies where required.
- Lead stress testing and scenario analysis programmes, reviewing outcomes and determining implications for capital, liquidity, and business resilience.
- Ensure robust management response plans are in place for extreme but plausible market scenarios.
- Review valuation methodologies and product control procedures in partnership with Finance.
- Challenge the effectiveness of existing controls and address any material gaps or weaknesses.
- Provide risk assessments for acquisitions, new products, and strategic change initiatives impacting the Equity business.
Governance & Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure alignment of market risk practices with the Group Risk Management Framework and Board-approved risk appetite.
- Develop and maintain risk measurement, modelling, and control frameworks that comply with regulatory expectations.
- Escalate material exposures and emerging risks to governance committees and the Board Risk Committee.
- Maintain strong and collaborative relationships with regulators, auditors, and governance bodies.
- Ensure full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and internal standards.
Process & Operational Excellence
- Oversee key risk processes where the function acts as first-line process owner.
- Continuously improve operational efficiency, control effectiveness, and process governance.
- Ensure operational risks within the function are proactively identified and mitigated.
Skills and Experience
- Extensive experience in Market Risk Management, with deep expertise in Equity Derivatives
and Credit Trading. - Strong technical knowledge of financial markets, derivatives products, valuation methodologies, and risk frameworks.
- Proven track record in senior market risk leadership roles within complex financial institutions.
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance risk exposure against return objectives.
- Demonstrated experience leading stress testing, scenario analysis, and risk governance initiatives.
- Proven ability to manage risk across geographically dispersed teams and diverse product portfolios.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, including engagement with senior front-office leaders, regulators, and auditors.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and influencing capabilities.
- Experience driving large-scale transformation and change management programmes.
- High level of cultural awareness and ability to work effectively in multicultural global environments.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Finance, Economics, or a related discipline; advanced qualifications preferred.
- Fluency in English (written and spoken).
- Extensive experience in Equity Market Risk, with a proven track record in a similar role.
- Strong technical expertise in Financial Markets, Market Risk, and Equity Derivatives.
- Well-developed commercial acumen, including the ability to assess risk versus return and support strategic decision-making.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, including experience working across diverse and multicultural environments.
- Proven ability to manage risk across geographically dispersed teams and a broad, complex product landscape.
- Results-driven mindset, with experience leading and delivering large-scale, complex change initiatives.
- Strong relationship management experience, including engagement with senior corporate stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
