Job Summary

As a Staff Software Engineer in the API Platforms team, you will lead the design, development and optimization of scalable, secure and high-performance API platforms. Your role involves driving technical strategy, providing mentorship to engineers, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver robust platform solutions that empower internal and external engineers.

You will be responsible for architecting reusable frameworks, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and implementing best practice for API engineering and API management. Additionally, you will proactively address technical debt, enhance system reliability and support the evolution of our platforms to meet business and engineering needs.

This role requires a strong background in distributed systems, API management technologies, and a deep understanding of cloud-native development. You’ll act as a technical leader, bridging complex requirements with innovative solutions, fostering engineering excellence, and ensuring our platforms scale with organisational growth.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy*

• Understand the bank’s strategy and implementing API Platform features to deliver the bank’s platform strategy.

Business*

• This role will work alongside with our API Platform team to build industry leading capabilities.

Processes*

• Understand the bank’s software delivery processes and implement solutions in line with the bank’s compliance and security requirement. 

People & Talent*

• Work collaboratively with the API Platform team and diverse engineers to deliver API Platform products and tooling

• Produce technical documentation and prepare training materials on the solutions being delivered and provide technical support.

Risk Management*

• Understand bank’s risk management framework and embed that into the technology solution being delivered.

Governance*

• Understand bank’s software delivery & quality assurance framework and assist in solutioning in respective governance activity.

Regulatory & Business Conduct*

• Display exemplary conduct and live by the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct.

• Take personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across Standard Chartered Bank. Our Ideal Candidate

• Has a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science,/ Software Engineering/ ICT/ Mathematics or other related courses. 

• Has at least 10 years of experience working as a Software Engineer/Dev Lead

• A strong communicator with experience in agile working environments

• Has done API development and owned API technical implementation in a scrum team

• Has experience in the following Tech Stack (required)

  • Micro services architecture

  • DevOps with exposure to CI/CD tools such as ADO, Git, Ansible.

  • ELK stack with data instrumentation & Telemetry 

  • Database systems and design on SQL & Postgre SQL

  • Front-end frameworks such as React, Vue and Lit

• Has hands-on experience in the following Tech Stack (preferred)

  • Java, Javascript and/or Go. Proficient in additional languages such as .NET, Rust, Scala, Python, Kotlin

  • OIDC, oAuth 2.0, Tokenization framework, MFA, Identity Management, Cryptography. Proficient in other security framework such as FIDO, SAML 

  • Unix and Windows host operating systems, scripting (Bash/Shell or PowerShell) & networking

  • Containers as well as container platform such as Podman, Docker and Kubernetes

• Eager to learn and curious

• Has good problem-solving skills – creativity, resourcefulness, lateral thinking

• Can do big-picture Thinking – maintainability, testability, usability, performance etc.

• Has positive attitude – passion for the task and achieving a solution

• Has good communication skills – explain, influence, listen, document thinking

• Independent and is able to work and deliver unsupervised, a self-starter

• Has great work discipline - can chase down solutions to resolution, to deliver quality
