Job Summary
We are seeking an individual to join our team at Standard Chartered Bank in New York. The successful candidate will be working directly with the Head, Legal, Transaction Banking, Americas and Head, Legal, Global Banking, Americas, as well as other team members to provide transactional legal advice to the Bank’s New York branch businesses.
We are seeking a highly organized, proactive, and discreet Legal Counsel to support our team. The Legal Counsel will provide expert and strategic legal advice to management on a wide range of banking and corporate topics. You will ensure that the Bank operates within the law at all times, offer counsel on legal issues, and facilitate business strategies by minimizing legal risks.

Day-to-Day Tasks
- Work with other Legal staff to provide legal coverage for US businesses within Global Banking and Transaction Banking (TB) and general Legal support for all US / Americas / New York law matters as needed.
- Assist Transaction Banking lead lawyer is matters related to trade finance, specifically focused on lending transactions.
- Assist Global Banking lead lawyer on syndicated and bilateral loans; working with external counsel.
- Working with other members of Americas Legal and front office to address legal issues for Region, including direct negotiations with clients and their counsel.
- Take personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across Standard Chartered Bank. This includes understanding and ensuring compliance with, in letter and spirit, all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and the Group Code of Conduct.
- Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.
- Work closely with Head of Legal, Americas; Head of Legal TB Americas; Head of Legal, Global Banking Americas; RMs/Sales/Products for TB and GB Americas; Credit Americas; Compliance Americas; Trade Ops Americas; External Law firms.
Skills and Experience we look for
- Juris Doctor or other equivalent Legal degree.
- Admitted to practice law in New York State preferred.
- Banking/Finance Law experience is a nice to have.
- Ability to identify legal risk relevant to the applicable businesses, services and documentation.
- Deep expertise in a specialized area (contracts, compliance, corporate law),
- Strong leadership/mentorship, strategic thinking, exceptional communication,
- Proven ability to manage complex transactions and guide senior leadership in dynamic environments
- Awareness and understanding of the regulatory framework in which the Group operates and the regulatory requirements relevant to the Americas region.
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial agreements.
- Managing external counsel and legal vendors.
- Developing and implementing legal processes, playbooks, and best practices.
- Providing guidance on risk management and regulatory changes.
- Serving as a trusted advisor to business units and senior management.

Recruitment Assessments
Expected annual base pay range for the role is 150,000 USD to 210,000 USD. The final offer will be determined on an individualized basis using a number of variables, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience and education, internal relativity, and specific work location. At Standard Chartered Bank, Base pay is only part of the total compensation package.
