Job Summary

The Risk Business Planning Manager plays a pivotal role in supporting the Chief Risk Officers for Wealth & Retail Banking (WRB) and Greater China & North Asia & ASEAN (GCNA & ASEAN) as a trusted strategic partner. This role is instrumental in shaping, implementing, and overseeing the risk management strategies across diverse regions, including WRB, GCNA, and ASEAN. With leadership responsibility over a team exceeding 600 professionals, the incumbent ensures operational excellence by guiding the team to achieve defined KPIs and adhering to the annual budget. The ideal candidate will exhibit a strong blend of strategic insight, operational discipline, and exceptional stakeholder management capabilities. They will confidently engage and influence senior executives, regulators, and internal collaborators, fostering a culture of risk awareness and adherence to governance. This position requires an individual capable of driving transformational initiatives within a dynamic and fast-paced banking environment, who thrives in steering complex risk frameworks that align with global banking standards and regional regulatory demands.

The Risk Business Planning Manager will be a key enabler in embedding risk culture and promoting proactive risk mitigation strategies throughout the organisation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Play an active role within the WRB, GCNA and ASEAN Risk Management Team (RMT), supporting the CRO, WRB and CRO, GCNA & ASEAN to deliver business objectives and build team awareness of the business value created.
  • Monitor and track progress of deliverables including key initiatives and projects that support the achievement of the strategic agenda.
  • Support the CRO, WRB and CRO, GCNA & ASEAN in all aspects of running the WRB, GCNA & ASEAN Risk function.
  • Drive alignment and engagement of key stakeholders in Business, Functions and their BPMs
  • Take the lead in driving continuous improvement, e.g. identifying and executing ad-hoc improvements to processes.
  • Set appropriate tone and expectations for the WRB, GCNA & ASEAN Risk teams and work in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including risk and control partners.
  • Support the development of talent to ensure a high-quality succession pipeline at all levels and ongoing development activities that focus on the identified high performing and high potential individuals within the businesses. Focus on inter-region and global talent opportunities and pipelines.
  • Manage agenda, prepare materials and track action items for various meetings including WRB Risk Committee, WRB, GCNA & ASEAN RMT, Risk Leadership Team and other meetings.
  • Review materials submitted to the CRO, WRB and CRO, GCNA & ASEAN and ensure timely follow through
  • Create and deliver reports and presentations, as required
  • Lead by example, building the appropriate culture and values, using effective leadership, coaching and engagement.
  • Work closely with Chief of Staff – Risk to coordinate people agenda across Risk.
  • Collaborate with RCFCR BPMs and the wider Risk function to anticipate any risks and issues inside and outside of the functions that the Group Chief Risk Officer should be aware of.
  • Collaborate with fellow MT BPMs, MT members and stakeholders to achieve this.

Job Requirements

  • A university degree in Business, Economics, Finance, or a closely related discipline is essential to provide a strong foundation in financial and economic principles relevant to risk management.
  • Comprehensive training in mandatory role-specific topics, regulatory requirements, and compliance matters across the banking industry to maintain up-to-date expertise.
  • Fluency in English is required for effective communication across global teams and regulatory bodies.
  • Exceptional written communication skills, with the ability to condense complex and technical information into clear, concise reports, typically summarised within half a page, thereby facilitating informed decision making by senior leadership.
  • Proven influence and negotiation abilities to constructively challenge and shape views at various organisational levels, fostering effective collaboration and driving desired outcomes.
  • Presence and gravitas enabling credible and impactful communication with senior internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and board members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills combined with a sensitivity to multicultural environments, allowing navigation through diverse regional business cultures with respect and understanding.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to thrive in a fast-moving environment, effectively prioritising and managing multiple tasks simultaneously without compromising quality.
  • Direct, hands-on experience in at least one risk control discipline, such as operational risk, credit risk, market risk, or compliance risk, evidencing technical proficiency and practical application knowledge
  • Professional Accreditation such as Enhanced Competency Framework (ECF) under the HK Institute of Bankers (HKIB) would be an advantage.
