The Environmental & Social Risk Management (“ESRM”) Senior Analyst role is part of the ESRM team responsible for managing environmental and social risk across the Bank with a focus on clients and transactions. The ESRM Senior Analyst will be required to consider the E&S performance of our clients and transaction against SCB’s environmental and social requirements and supporting the delivery of the bank’s Environmental and Social Risk Management Framework. 

 

This role will require the successful applicant to:

  • Establish a deep knowledge of Standard Chartered Bank’s clients across sensitive sectors and assess their E&S performance in line with the Group’s Position Statements for these sectors (Extractive Industries, Power Generation, Agro-Industries, Chemicals & Manufacturing, Infrastructure & Transport and Thermal Coal). 
  • Conduct Environmental and Social Risk Assessments (ESRA) reviews in timely manner.
  • Regularly interact with business and front-line teams
  • As appropriate, have engagement with Net Zero, Sustainable Finance,Transition Finance and ESGR to identify potential opportunities for clients to improve their own E&S performance.
  • Assist with portfolio-level analysis and monitoring of the E&S risks of the Bank.
  • As appropriate, assist with tasks such as E&S risk training, reporting, internal ESRM document updates. 

 

This desktop-based role will require strong analytical and research skills across financial / sustainability statements, whilst maintaining an ongoing awareness of E&S issues (i.e. Human Rights, Indigenous Peoples, Communities, Biodiversity, Occupational Health & Safety, Climate Change).

 

The role sits within our Environmental and Social Risk Management Hub team based in Warsaw, Poland, and is part of the wider Chief Sustainability Office which serves as a centre of excellence on a broad set of ESG topics, providing thought leadership, strategic advice and transaction support for SCB’s clients globally. 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Review of Environmental and Social Risk Assessments to determine whether our client’s E&S performance is aligned with the Bank’s Position Statements. This will require understanding of the Bank’s E&S Standards, supported by relevant Guidelines.
  • Representing ESRM in Risk Metrics with responsibility for oversight of action plan follow-ups, ensuring appropriate escalation.
  • Ownership of sector specific Position Statements tracker, producing reporting and data analysis in response to ad hoc queries and regular reporting.
  • Support the implementation of ESRM into existing risk frameworks, governance, processes, and policies.
  • Support management of client alignment with SCB Position Statements and related E&S requirements.
  • Regular interaction with business and front-line teams will be a core component of the role. This involves helping the business navigate E&S requirements of the Bank and providing guidance on particular client or transaction situations.
  • Coordinating ESRM-related training initiatives, including agreement on learning objectives and content with relevant stakeholders.
  • Reviewing and providing input on training materials to ensure alignment with ESRM frameworks and requirements.
  • Organising and planning internal training sessions.

Skills and Experience

 

  • University degree preferably related to Sustainability / ESG, or relevant post-graduate experience/studies.
  • Applicants that have non-financial services industry experience will be considered if from a sector where the Bank has a Position Statement.
  • 3+ years relevant work experience  with sustainability / ESG related initiatives, ideally with  experience working within the finance sector).
  • Awareness of E&S Governance, including industry specific standards.
  • Analytical skills to conduct comprehensive research on client E&S performance.
  • Global awareness of E&S trends to examine and detect trends at industry/regional level.
  • Strong communication skills and engaging disposition to work closely with Credit Analysts across SCB markets to ensure accurate understanding of client operations.
  • Problem-solving mindset and the ability to provide well thought through solutions based on data analysis.
