Job Summary

  • The Chapter Area Lead Back-end development – WRB Tech is a leadership role focussing on people development & capability building in backend technologies. The role is also accountable for defining the operating model of the Chapter area and also support capacity planning across Squads/ hives. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy

•    Define technology strategy & roadmap to create micro services, re-usable APIs and its integration for platforms and applications across WRB.
•    Provide inputs in technology evaluations, RFPs related to back-end development
•    Establish a robust deployment topology to cater to critical non-functional requirements such as Zero down-time, blue-green deployments, graceful degradation of services in the event of catastrophic failures
•    Experienced former practitioner with leadership ability.
•    Oversees the execution of functional standards and best practices
•    Provide thought leadership on the craft, inspire and retain talents by developing and nurturing an extensive internal and external network of practitioners.
•    This role is around capability building, it is not to own applications or delivery
•    Creates a strategy roadmap of technical work
•    Works to drive technology convergence and simplification across their chapter area

Business
•    Work with business to identify projected growth volumes of customer/ consumer traffic, perform capacity planning of back end infrastructure resources
•    Dedicated management role, is tech native, can understand technology down to a detailed level if needed
•    Responsible to evolve the craft towards improving automation, simplification and innovative use of latest market trends.
•    Scales the practices and capabilities across multiple hives i.e. mobile/front end experience across the app, driving consistency across skill domains, enabling scaling and consistency of skillsets and practices in partnership with the Hive Tech Leads
Processes
•    Establish a change and release management process that avoids down-time (Blue-green/ Canary)
•    Monitor and proactively upgrade backend platforms to reduce obsolescence/ security vulnerabilities.
•    Establish and operate an API platform promoting re-use of APIs across WRB including API discoverability
•    Adopt and embed the Change Delivery Standards throughout the lifecycle of the product / service.
•    Ensure role, job descriptions and expectations are clearly set and periodic feedback provided to the chapter leads
•    Ensures the establishment of capability development systems across the chapter area, measuring and tracking the improvement of their chapter area members as well as chapter leads

People & Talent
•    Accountable for people management and capability development of their Chapter members.
•    Reviews metrics on capabilities and performance across all of the Chapters in their area, has improvement backlog for their Chapters and drives continual improvement of Chapters.

Risk Management
•    Responsible for effective capacity risk management across the Chapter Area with regards to attrition and leave plans.
Governance
•    Ensure all artefacts and assurance deliverables are as per the required standards and policies (e.g., SCB Governance Standards, ESDLC, Corporate Group Plan etc.).
Regulatory & Business Conduct
•    Display exemplary conduct and live by the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct. 
•    Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.

Our Ideal Candidate

Requirements & Skills
•    Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
•    14+ years of experience in backend development, with a strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language and framework (e.g., Java/Spring, Python/Django).
•    Solid understanding of database management systems, including both SQL and NoSQL databases
•    Expertise in performance engineering of distributed systems.
•    Ability to articulate the overall vision for the Chapters and ensure upskilling of the organisation holistically
•    Experience in identifying skill gaps and mitigate risks to deliverables
•    Ensure all solutions are as per Architecture Standards
•    Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs
•    Familiarity with version control systems, such as Git, Bitbucket and CI / CD platforms like ADO, Jenkins
•    Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
•    Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
•    Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
•    Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus
