Key Responsibilities

The Managing Director, Global Head of Sustainability Affairs, Coverage is accountable for the development and integration of Sustainable Finance across the Corporate and Finance Institutions (FI) Coverage businesses, driving the coordination of the sustainability strategy across all client segments and markers, including the development of impact finance and sustainable finance products and services in order to meet client needs and investor demand.  You will work directly with the Global Head of Corporate Coverage to embed the sustainability strategy across Coverage, and key stakeholders including product partners and other business heads including the FI Coverage Heads, ensuring effective stakeholder engagement on sustainability affairs to identify and capitalise on strategic opportunities.  You will promote and develop approaches to sustainability that are consistent with the overall bank-wide sustainability strategy and act as a global senior sustainability representative for clients and other external stakeholders including regulators.  This role is a key member of the Corporate Coverage Management Team and the FI Coverage Management Team.  Core responsibilities include: 

Strategy and Business

  • Lead the development and implementation of client strategies for the Bank’s Net Zero commitments and Sustainable Finance products and services.
  • Identify and pursue growth opportunities in emerging sustainable sectors.
  • Drive a coordinated sustainable finance plan across all segments to ensure effective upskilling and execution of the Coverage corporate plan.
  • Collaborate with product teams to innovate and scale solutions that align with client needs and regulatory frameworks.
  • Help to create unique and differentiated propositions for each business and sub-segment to deliver impact. 

  • Support development of a Sustainable Finance suite of products meeting client needs across all segments.
  • Set and agree Sustainable Finance targets with Coverage Heads and Product partners.
  • Support the development, promotion, and implementation of the Bank’s Position Statements within the first line of defence and related underlying environmental and social policies, standards, and practices.
  • Work with partners across the Bank to help advance market specific sustainability strategies that become embedded within the relevant business.
  • Support the Bank as a senior sustainability ambassador, helping to promote the sustainable finance franchise. 
  • Stay abreast of sustainability developments and regulatory changes that may impact relevant business opportunities and risks. 
  • Support the Global Head of Corporate Coverage in identifying and positioning the Bank on key sustainable finance opportunities, themes, and topics. 
  • Oversee and guide the execution of sustainable finance transactions working closely with the Strategic Advisory Team, Coverage Sustainability Leads, CSO and other partners across the bank.
  • Keep abreast of the competitive regional landscape to ensure the bank is employing industry best practice and bring strategic thought and vision as to how the corporate landscape regionally/globally is changing and where areas of international growth lie.

Business

  • Drive sector-level engagement to align on decarbonization pathways and common metrics with stakeholders across the bank and stakeholders across industries.
  • Actively originate new sustainable finance business and grow the franchise by capitalising on bank competitive attributes whilst developing new relationships where required.
  • In collaboration with senior management and relationship managers engage c-suite and decision makers of key clients to elevate sustainability dialogue with clients, promoting a move away from ‘transactional’ reactive client coverage to consistent value-added partner/trusted advisor status. 
  • Establish MIS to ensure Coverage leadership is informed on sustainable finance performance, including new ideas on sustainability themes, best practices, and risks.

  • Maintain a strong working relationship with Risk, Strategy, CSO, Finance, Legal and Compliance and other key stakeholders in the business including Coverage Heads and Product Partners.
  • Good understanding and of the Bank’s position on environmental themes and issues externally and internally, including the Position Statements, Equator Principles and associated standards and practices. 
  • Professionally represent Standard Chartered at the highest levels within country and region. 
  • Ensure that industry and product knowledge is continually developed personally and within the team.
  • Stay abreast and anticipate the developments of the industries in which our clients operate.
  • Liaise with business teams across the Bank but especially in CSO, Coverage, WRB, Banking, FM, TB, and Risk.
  • Lead and / or participate with clients, external counsel, syndication, and consultants on project financing to ensure alignment with the Bank’s sustainability requirements.
  • Help to brief Executive and Board level stakeholders and other key business head stakeholders on sustainability themes and topics.
  • Work with partners across the Bank to help develop and drive their overall Sustainability strategy and assist with integration across multiple business areas. 
  • Oversee the development and translation of appropriate internal messaging on key CSO/sustainability topics across Coverage, regions, and segments

Processes

  • Proactively manage the designated Sustainable Finance client and product portfolio to ensure collaboration and effective execution with key stakeholders.
  • Risks are appropriately identified and managed.
  • Develop opportunities through attendance at key Industry or Regulatory events as necessary.
  • Help embed the Bank’s Sustainability ambitions into the day-to-day operations of coverage global / regional front facing processes. 
  • Help shape and evolve the integration of the sustainability strategy of the Bank.
  • Help influence the evolution of the bank’s Sustainability Frameworks and Position Statements 
  • Help educate partners across the bank on the most relevant emerging Sustainable Finance topics and best practices.
  • Be a culture carrier for sustainable finance across the organisation, collaborating with all businesses and functions to ensure Coverage is appropriately integrated.

People and Talent 

  • Lead through example and build the appropriate culture and values.  Set appropriate tone and expectations from broader team and work in collaboration with risk and control partners.
  • Ensure the provision of ongoing training and development of people and ensure that holders of all critical functions are suitably skilled and qualified for their roles ensuring that they have effective supervision in place to mitigate any risks.
  • Employ, engage, and retain high quality people, with succession planning for critical roles.
  • Responsibility to review team structure/capacity plans on an ongoing basis.
  • Set and monitor job descriptions and objectives for direct reports and provide feedback and rewards in line with their performance against those responsibilities and objectives

Risk Management

  • Take the initiative regarding regulatory, reputational, and ethical matters, taking the initiative for providing proactive advice to clients as identified. 
  • Coach and manage the team in these matters and ensure they are adequately trained in and cognisant of regulatory, reputational, and ethical risks.
  • Ensure that key regulatory risks and concerns are raised into the governance framework throughout the team.

Governance

  • Responsible for assessing the effectiveness of the Group’s arrangements to deliver effective governance, oversight, and controls in the business and, if necessary, oversee changes in these areas.
  • Awareness and understanding of the regulatory framework, in which the Group operates, and the regulatory requirements and expectations relevant to the role.
  • Responsible for delivering ‘effective governance’; capability to challenge fellow executives effectively; and willingness to work with any local regulators in an open and cooperative manner.

  • Work with partners across CSO, Coverage Business Development, Strategic Advisory Solutions and HR People Capabilities to ensure talent development and sustainable finance fluency throughout the Coverage team.
  • Consult with stakeholders in Risk and Legal & Compliance to ensure that the portfolio remains credit worthy and within the policies of the bank.

External:

  • Senior Coverage Sustainable Finance point of contact with clients, regulators acting as a trusted advisor to C-level stakeholders and external stakeholders.
  • Peers across the Banking sector particularly within Sustainability, Sustainable Finance, and other related key industries.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other responsibilities assigned under Group, Country, Business or Functional policies and procedures.
  • Continue to perform responsibilities toward championing driving process and policy efficiencies to deliver greater revenue on a global basis.

Qualifications

Academic or Professional Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Banking or Finance preferred.  
  • Substantial experience in the banking industry, including demonstrated success in a similar role
  • Risk & AML certified as stipulated by Bank policy
  • Languages: English and/or local language skills as relevant to country requirements 
  • Graduate degree from an accredited university or equivalent
  • Business Strategy and Model: Sharp business acumen (including ability to assess risk and appropriate levels of return), strategic insight, strong leadership qualities, excellent interpersonal skills and multi-cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Regulatory Framework and Requirements: Awareness and understanding of the regulatory framework in which the firm operates, and the regulatory requirements and expectations relevant to risk reporting and data management.
