Job Summary
The Manager Operational Risk role will have responsibility for supporting and execution of the Operational Risk Framework, its related Policies and Standards in line with the regulatory requirements of the Bank. The Operational Risk Manager role is a 2nd line of defence role, where the role includes responsibility for overseeing, supporting, challenging, and deciding operational risk matters at SCB AG.
The role requires expertise in internal controls, issue management, risk and control and self-assessment processes in the Operational Risk domain, to ensure that the identified risk issues and associated remediation actions across the Bank are delivered and completed, with the highest levels of discipline and in line with Bank´s policies and standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute operational risk management processes where the Operational Risk function is designated as first line owner, ensuring seamless operation and compliance.
- Provide expert support to the Head of Operational Risk to drive effective management of non-financial risks within the Risk function, ensuring alignment with internal standards and external regulatory mandates.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives for risk management frameworks, introducing efficiencies that enhance the effectiveness and agility of operational risk oversight.
- Serve as the second line operational risk control owner for various business and functional processes within SCB AG and the broader region, maintaining rigorous oversight and governance.
- Monitor and enforce adherence to local and global operational risk policies, standards, and frameworks, collaborating with country and global process owners to address any deviations promptly.
- Ensure compliance with Board-approved risk tolerances and controls, escalating significant breaches or material exceptions to senior management and relevant risk committees.
- Promote and exemplify Standard Chartered’s values and Code of Conduct within the operational risk function, nurturing a culture of integrity, ethics, and compliance.
- Assess operational risk exposure in relation to the bank’s strategic objectives, informing business plans, product development, and process enhancements to mitigate risk.
- Oversee the implementation and utilization of the Operational and Technology Risk Type Framework including risk appetite calibration, stress testing exercises, and management of SLA and EUC risk elements.
- Validate and challenge risk assessments — both inherent and residual — for new and existing processes, ensuring risk rating accuracy and appropriateness of control standards and key risk indicators.
- Review and provide expert challenge on treatment plans, residual risk acceptance, and remediation strategies for operational risks, applying delegated authorities prudently.
- Lead investigations and root cause analyses for significant operational risk events, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and risk exposures are appropriately managed.
- Conduct stress testing and scenario analysis to identify vulnerabilities and ensure sufficient capital adequacy as per ICAAP methodologies, advising management on mitigation strategies.
- Develop and deliver comprehensive operational risk training programs to build awareness and capability across the organisation.
- Review and advise on operational risk implications in product launches, projects, and change management approvals, ensuring compliance with policy and minimizing risk exposure.
Skills and Experience
- Manage Operational Risk
- Market Knowledge: Substantial experience in the banking industry, including demonstrated success in a similar role.
- Risk Management and Control: Demonstrated track record in successful management and expertise in process design and control.
- Regulatory Framework and Requirements: Awareness and understanding of the regulatory framework, in which the firm operates, and the regulatory requirements and expectations relevant to the Operational Risk function.
- Non-technical Skills: Relationship management experience — with external stakeholders
- Operational risk management experience.
- Business/function experience.
- A clear understanding of the Bank's approach to the management of operational risk, or equivalent experience gained in other organizations.
- Ability to leverage resources across the organizations to complete deliverables.
- Sound judgment and courage necessary to perform a control role and maintain effective working relationships.
